Scary Reads

In the spirit of Halloween, I wanted to list a few spooky books that you may enjoy. All the reviews can be found on my blog at www.bookreviewsbycrystal.blogspot.com The scariest book I've read has to be Snuff by Eric Enck and Adam Huber, it was so burtal and discusting the way the killers murdered their victims. I also enjoyed Dead of Winter by Sean Harris, it was one of those books that you're constantly looking out of the corner of your eye to catch the shadow of a ghost, and there are more books on my blog that give me the chills, just go and have a look for yourself :)

Crystal: What genre(s) do you write? Why do you write the stories that you write?

C.W.: I write historical fiction set in the Renaissance. My novel THE LAST QUEEN is the story of Juana of Castile, the last queen of Spanish blood to inherit the throne, and of her tumultuous relationships with her parents Isabella and Ferdinand and her fight for her throne against her husband, Philip of Hapsburg. Juana is legendary in Spain; she is known as Juana la Loca— the mad queen. Outside of Spain, she’s hardly mentioned except as the sister of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and as the mother of the Emperor Charles V. Yet her life was full of drama, intrigue and passion, certainly a subject worthy of a novel.

Juana has always fascinated me. I grew up in Spain hearing her legend and I visited many of the places associated with her, so when I decided to write about her I set out to uncover the secret behind the myth. I am drawn to secret histories; after all, what we call history is a mixture of opinion and fact. There are always those tales that don’t get told or are altered to suit preconceived notions. In addition, women in history often suffer from the biased viewpoints of male contemporaries, who chronicled their lives and the events of the era. Juana, for me, is one of those women. There is much more to her story than we’ve been told. This was my primary reason for wanting to write about her.


Crystal: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

C.W.: I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember; my mom tells me I was always scribbling stories in spiral-bound notebooks. I first decided to write a novel – or, try to write a novel! - in my early teens but I didn’t seriously get going until my early twenties. I’d be reading historical novels and realized there were certain perspectives I never came across: it seemed to me at that time that most historical novels followed the popular or accepted versions of history. So, I set out to write my own novel. Of course, I made every mistake possible. I needed massive editing and had to build my skills as a writer, but I never found it daunting to sit down and write. It’s just something I do.


Crystal: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

C.W.: I am inspired by many things: a line in a book, a portrait, a trip to a place I’ve never visited. I must admit, I’m also inspired by the dark horses in history, the black legends, so to speak. If someone has a bad reputation or is a controversial subject, it always gets my attention. Even very popular historical women like Anne Boleyn have suffered from historical distortion; it excites me to explore those areas that have been overlooked and breathe new life into these people. The Renaissance is my preferred area of expertise and never ceases to inspire me. I’m mesmerized by the simultaneous beauty and brutality of the period; it’s a time when some of the most important, breathtaking works of art were created and is characterized by one of the greatest upheavals in society ever seen, from religion to the way countries defined themselves. I could spend my entire life writing about this tumultuous era.

Crystal: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

C.W.: I try to keep a regular schedule, in that I write every day. For the moment, I continue to hold a day-job, so writing takes place in the evenings and on weekends. My motto is: Write every day. I’ve learned to be flexible; as long as I get words out on a daily basis, I’m okay. I only worry if I don’t write. The world is seductive; writing can seem, in comparison, a lonely chore. Some days, I’ll write for hours on end; others, I can barely get out a decent paragraph. Still, that’s how books are built: word by word.

Crystal: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?

C.W.: Excitement!

Crystal: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

C.W.: I read voraciously. I also love to walk my dog, Paris, and watch movies. I’m a big movie fan. And I enjoy hiking. Nature inspires me to reflect and remember what is truly important in life. I also like to donate time to environmental causes and animal rights. Lastly, getting dressed up and going to a nice restaurant is always a treat. Good food and wine are essential to me.

Crystal: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

C.W.: I’ve written three novels to date. THE LAST QUEEN and my mystery novel THE SECRET LION, set in the Tudor court of Edward VI, are both published; my third novel about Catherine de Medici will be published by Ballantine Books in 2009.

It’s hard to say which one is my favorite; in a way, they all are, for different reasons. Each presented unique research opportunities and writing challenges; each of the characters is special to me. THE LAST QUEEN is perhaps the novel closest to my heart. I’m half-Spanish by birth; and Juana was very Iberian in her personality. To be able to write about 16th century Spain was thrilling. Juana is so contemporary in many ways, struggling as she did to balance life and duty, love and betrayal. I do hope readers enjoy reading her story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Crystal: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?

C.W.: I base my novels on people who actually lived; THE SECRET LION is the exception in that the main character is fictional. But he interacts with historical figures like Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth Tudor, and the experiences he lives through are based on actual events.

CA: Why do you write the stories that you write?

Pat: A need that is very hard to explain. It’s like a need for water when you really want a soda. Until you drink the water you are unfulfilled.

CA: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Pat: From as far back as elementary school there’s been a hunger for words and putting them to paper.

CA: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

Pat: My father was a lyricist and a poet when he wasn’t preaching. I believe writing is in my DNA. I have other brothers and sisters in the record industry who are song writers, etc. One of my inspirations has always been and continues to be Maya Angelou. She once gave me great advice. She told me to “always be honest in my writing.” I’ve tried to adhere to that in keeping my own voice and authenticity.

CA: When writers block attacks, what do you do to get back on track?

Pat: My stories are primarily character-driven. When having difficulty in discerning their thoughts, dilemmas, etc., I try to find a quiet place. With pen and paper I simply listen to them and take notes. When that process is complete I try to translate what they’ve given. When that doesn’t work I tell everyone in my house to get their own food, laundry and whatever. “The Writing Diva needs her space.” And because I’m the only female in my house I sometimes have to act a fool. The latter usually works best.

CA: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

Pat: My schedule is extremely hectic. I’m also a performer and I travel around the country. I have a very delicate balancing act. Currently, I’m also taking care of a premature grandbaby… whew! But my husband is so in love with the little one that I have to sometimes ask him can I do something for her : )

CA: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?

Pat: I’m one of those authors who places her books into the hands of my pastor. Once he and the pulpit pray God’s blessings upon it I let it go. I’m then onto the next book. I know prayer works. This past year I was plagued with the Whooping cough, thyroid problems and couldn’t promote or hardly perform. And but for God, my current novel, Somewhat Saved, entered onto the Essence Best Seller’s List at # 6. It is also nominated for a 2008 AALBS Best comedy award. Last year my novel Cruisin’ On Desperation won.

CA: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Pat: I like to just relax. I seldom get to do that. I’m a political junky. With this electrifying and historical election in the making I’m glued to the television and Google.

CA: What is something shocking or weird about you that your readers don’t know about?

Pat: I got my passport through the FBI. (true)

CA: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Pat: I’ve written about six books. I can’t say which my favorite book is anymore than I can say which of my children my favorite is.

CA: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?

Pat: Oh definitely based upon those I know. Ain’t that scary?????

CA: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Pat: Other than the obvious which is prayer I would encourage them to study their craft. And if for no other reason than to protect your finances and your career; be careful when selecting an agent. Because I’m in the midst of litigation I won’t say anything further. Take it from me…. Check folks out!!! And then check them out again.

Making a sudden career change after the magical age of thirty-nine seemed impossible. I had been in the Entertainment Industry for many years. First, I had been part of a famous R&B girl group called Arlene Smith and the Chantels. I knew that in order to survive you needed to bring your own special brand of vaseline to every meeting, etc. I was determined to be honest and do everything I could to be above reproach in everything I did. Of course, that idea was formed by a very spiritual mind. The record industry is anything but spiritually minded. During my years of promotion and marketing I managed to work at various record companies; hating every moment and praying for the Lord to move me somewhere-anywhere, before I became an unwilling meal on the Corporate Entertainment table. No matter how hard I prayed nothing changed. So I stayed, earned a paycheck and learned my craft.
Finally, in 1997 my big break came. I had gone from promotion and marketing at Columbia Records to being an Executive Producer for one of their albums. They loved the album, spent a lot of money on it and me---then they dropped it! Here I was, forty plus a day. I knew nothing else and depression set in. I couldn't even get arrested at the record company. My career candle had flickered and died because some unknown person had written "dropped" on the album.
It was as if something inside of me died. What could I do? Who could I turn to? I had never stopped praying so that seemed as good a time as any to continue in earnest. I slowly came to realize that I needed to mourn my career. Does that sound foolish? It did to me. Yet, that is exactly what I did. I went though all the emotions of mourning for about a month. After crying and calling the industry a bunch of names that would never grace their letterhead, I received a phone call from Industry veteran publicist and author of the novel "Soul Food", LaJoyce Berkshire. LaJoyce and I had been friends for a few years and what she told me that day was so simple yet it turned my life around. She said, "Gurlfriend, pick yourself up. You ain't exactly without talent. You're always writing stories or something. Publish one of them yourself and see what happens. If for no other reason than to take your mind off of what's happening to you now." And so I did.
In the summer of 1997 I published a short humorous story called, Sister Betty! God’s Calling You! It was only twenty-two pages of the comical efforts of an angel-in-training who after getting into heaven on a technicality had to accept the mission of turning around a hypocritical church. The angel had to start with one of the church’s most elderly and unrelenting hypocrite---Sister Betty. I let several people read it and they always laughed out loud. I had been writing short stories about Sister Betty, Reverend Knott Enuff Money and the other spiritually challenged congregation members of the Ain’t Nobody Else Right But Us-All Others Goin’ To Hell Church since 1970. It never once occurred to me that anyone, other than a few people that had seen me perform skits based upon these characters, would care. I released the little book on the Internet. It took off, my career changed and I was all the better for it.
You might ask, what does this have to do with marketing and promotion skills. Well, like I said, I hated every day of having to do promotion and marketing. That did not mean that I did not learn a thing or two. Instead of continuing to mourn what had been I used those skills to launch what was going to be---my career change. Using my marketing and promotion savvy, I not only created a new genre of fiction called, “Gospel Comedy”, I have also created an International-Interdenominational fan base. Through my books and my humor column I have been blessed to bring to thousands the power of God’s love using humor. I also showed the publishing world that “short stories” can be appreciated and sold in quantities if marketed and promoted the right way.
So now I can thank the Recording Industry and especially thank God that life truly does exist…after the age of forty and that I can not only laugh about it but share my satirical humor for His purpose. And, if I can do it so can you. Just use those life experiences. Share them. There is a market for you. Above all, put God first and the rest will just naturally progress.
By the way, guess who was one of the first people to call after Sister Betty started making so much noise...that's right---The Recording Industry. I now have video tapes available in addition to the seven book series and I'm off to California to perform my One Woman show called, what else! Sister Betty! God's Calling You!.

Why do I write: I feel compelled to get God’s message out to the masses.

Crystal: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Joshua: I never wanted to be a writer, however, I would continually wake up at 4:00am with thoughts and words forming in my mind and I recorded them on pads of paper lying by my bed. I Later I realized the words were from the Holy Spirit to be shared.

Crystal: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

Joshua: My love for Christ, His church, and people

Crystal: When writers block attacks, what do you do to get back on track?
Joshua: I seldom have writers block because I am a recorder rather than an initiator. I feel no pressure for me to produce on my own.

Crystal: What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
Joshua: I am a pastor of a very active church and ministry so writing is not my primary task. When I feel the inspiration to write I take three to five days off consecutively each month, go into seclusion and work from morning to night until I complete the book.

Crystal: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?

Joshua: Excited

Crystal: What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Joshua: I work a lot with people, poor, homeless, needy, disadvantaged. That is my real joy.

Crystal: What is something shocking or weird about you that your readers don’t know about?
Joshua: What is most shocking to me is the fact that up until my late early thirties I was too shy to talk to people one on one. My high school yearbook said: “Cheerful as a bird, always see but never heard.” I find it astounding that by the grace of God, over the past thirty years I have stood before thousands and proclaimed the Good News of God in Christ.

Crystal: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Joshua: I have written two books and I am presently working on a third. My first book “Can These Bones Live?” is my favorite probably because it was my introduction to writing. Can these bones live is the miraculous story of a God given vision to a church, people, and community. It has received great reviews. My new book “Almost Persuaded, Now to believe.” Is more comprehensive, having a workbook and teaching guide and is also downloadable as well as on Audio CD.

Crystal: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?

Joshua: Both of my books are based on real people.

Crystal: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Joshua: Do not get discouraged if your work does not find ready acceptance by a publisher. Some publishers only want books of a specific genre and subject matter, so you must keep trying until you find the right one. I look at rejections as a positive reason to move more quickly to the next publisher.

CA: What genre(s) do you write? Why do you write the stories that you write?

HL: My latest book, Read Well, Think Well, is an informational book for parents who want to help their children become good readers. It’s also a book that teachers can use to plan instruction. Since my publisher has asked me to send a proposal for another book, it’s likely that I will continue to write books for parents and teachers.

CA: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

HL: Well, I started writing poems in kindergarten; but I started thinking about becoming a professional writer after I completed my Ph.D. I realized that if I could complete a book-length dissertation (for which I won an award) then I could write other books.

CA: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

HL: My inspiration is the children and adolescents I teach. I want them to have great futures; so everything I write is to support them, their parents, and teachers.

CA: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

HL: When I wrote Read Well, Think Well I was asked to complete the manuscript during my two month summer vacation. I basically lived at my computer for eight weeks and saw very few people other than the Chinese take-out guy. Next time around, I’ll ask for six to eight months and work mostly on the weekends.

CA: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?

HL: Accomplished

CA: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

HL: My answer’s not surprising. What’s every author’s favorite activity? I love to read. I’m a very promiscuous reader. I go with a lot of different genres. I also love the opera, especially Mozart. Walking is a blissful activity for me. There’s a beautiful wooded park near my home. And of course it’s summer, the time my son and I go to see every action movie Hollywood can come up with. A shout out to my pal Hell Boy!

CA: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

HL: I wrote two sci-fi books for kids. They didn’t sell very well. (J.K. Rowling’s not tossing in bed worrying about competition from me—LOL.) Now, I’ve written Read Well, Think Well. It’s by far my favorite book because I feel that I’ve contributed something valuable to the world.

We write books and research articles in many genres. We write as a husband/wife team. Before the union, we wrote individually. CA: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

For me, it was in the 5th grade at St. Thomas High School. Our Social Science teacher,
Miss Jerwood, told a story about a soldier in England that touched me profoundly. She
told about the soldier who came home, without notice, after having lost a leg in war.

CA: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?

Our inspiration has always been a deep desire to help our fellow man. Our worldwide travels focused our attention and energy toward finding solutions for tough problems. CA: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
